Of these investigations, 43 of the 50 human studies have found that elevated fluoride exposure is associated with reduced IQ, while 30 of the 32 animal studies have found that fluoride exposure impairs the learning and/or memory capacity of animals.
The human studies, which are based on IQ examinations of over 11,000 children, also provide compelling evidence that fluoride exposure during the early years of life can damage a child’s developing brain. One study shows it damages the IQ on average by a shocking 7 points. This is of particular concern in poorer areas where children are already disadvantaged, and will ultimately even affect their financial wellbeing in their future.
After reviewing 27 of the human IQ studies, a team of Harvard scientists have concluded that fluoride’s effect on the young brain should now be a high research priority.
It is interesting to note that before any of the studies finding reduced IQ in humans were known in the western world, a team of U.S. scientists at a Harvard-affiliated research centre predicted, based on behavioural effects they observed in fluoride-treated animals, that fluoride might be capable of reducing IQ in humans.
So why are we having a neurotoxin that contains arsenic added to our water?
Dr Bill Hirzy states that the prime reason for adding the by-product fluosilicic acid (fluoride) from phosphate fertilizer manufacturing into our water is to use up the toxic waste that otherwise would be a problem. Water and air pollution are minimized, and water authorities have a low-cost source of fluoride available to them. Note that pharmaceutical grade fluoride that is used in our toothpaste is not what is added to the water. It is industrial waste.
99% of this fluoridated water is not drunk and is flushed down drains, which makes the addition of it somewhat flawed, even without the associated health issues.
Professor Paul Connett suggested that the Green Party should know better than to support the use of fluoride, and challenged our government as being negligent for not looking at the science presented to them in this book, written by Prof. Connett and two other scientists, “The Case against Fluoride: How Hazardous Waste Ended Up in Our Drinking Water and the Bad Science and Powerful Politics That Keep It There”.
On the cover of the book it states that Sweden rejected fluoride in the 1970s and that the three scientists have shown in the book the wisdom of that decision.
Water fluoridation is rare in European Countries and has been discontinued in numerous countries, including Germany, Finland, Japan, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, and recently Israel.
Prof. Connett mentions Scotland’s Childsmile project has reduced tooth decay dramatically without the addition of fluoride to the water.
In some European counties you can buy salt with added fluoride.
This gives people choice and does not medicate the whole population with an uncontrolled and inconsistent dose, and defies the ethic that people must be given informed consent for medication.
Prof. Connett says it is a betrayal by health departments and boards that the science has not been properly considered. We have already seen in this country that promoters of fluoride don’t want to debate the issue with Prof. Connett and others, as this would alert the media to the issue and encourage people to seek the truth.
He says, “Stop believing the paradigm, and look at the science with an open mind.” People tend to believe those who wear white coats, but is that really how we judge knowledge?
Recently the Minister of Health, Dr Jonathan Coleman, has exempted fluoride chemicals from the Medicines Act 1981, while admitting that fluoride compounds are medicines when given to you in a pill but not when put in your water supply!
So our minister has signed into law the facility for councils to add unmonitored industrial waste products to public water supplies that can no longer be classed as medicines. It is hard to fathom how a Minister of Health can possibly think this is acceptable.
It is worthy of note that the sugar lobby was one of the first major supporters of fluoride. Even in 1949 they were looking at how to increase sugar use without increasing tooth decay. Toothpaste manufacturers were also quick to jump on the bandwagon.
However there is no study that shows that water fluoridation to be very effective. The addition of fluoride to toothpaste has made a small difference to teeth as fluoride works topically. If people choose to use fluoride, that is an appropriate way to administer it.
However in a child’s mouth, only 0.6 of one tooth surface is shown to have any improvement as a result of fluoridation. Already through our food and our toothpaste we are receiving higher than safe levels of fluoride, without it being added to our drinking water.
By meekly accepting this situation we are risking our children’s intelligence, and other health issues, for such a minimal gain.
Professor Paul Connett is the Executive Director of the Fluoride Action Network (FAN). He has spoken and given more than 2,000 presentations in forty-nine states and fifty-two countries.
He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Cambridge and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Dartmouth College and is a retired professor of environmental chemistry and toxicology at St. Lawrence University.
In his fascinating presentations Professor Connett brings new research to light, including links between fluoride and harm to the brain, bones, and endocrine system, and informs us about how the evidence that fluoridation reduces tooth decay is surprisingly weak.

Dr William (Bill) Hirzy is a former Senior Vice-President of the Union for the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
He has a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Missouri. He has been involved in environmental and human health risk assessment for 36 years, in the chemical industry, then at EPA HQ as senior risk assessment scientist.
Since 1986, at EPA as a union officer, he has studied and followed the developing science on fluoride toxicity.
On June 29th, 2000, Dr Hirzy was invited to give testimony to the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, and Water on behalf of the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) Chapter 280 – U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Headquarters.
At the time, Dr. Hirzy was serving his sixth term as the Senior Vice-President of the Union. His presentation that day was, “Why EPA’s Union of Professionals Opposes Fluoridation.”
